Laguna Beach started out as an artist colony in the 1920s when it was home to about 300 residents, almost half of which were artists who wanted to capture the area’s beautiful landscape. Over time, it has grown to encompass over 23,000 inhabitants on 9 square miles. Laguna Beach also has a booming tourism industry, yet it retains a unique village charm reminiscent of a small town.
Arts and Culture
Laguna Beach has remained true to its origins as an arts community, which embraces commerce and culture equally. This town is home to 18 arts organizations, approximately 100 galleries and some of Orange County's oldest art establishments. These include the Laguna Playhouse, Laguna Art Museum and the Laguna College of Art and Design.
Laguna Beach has four public schools with extraordinary GreatSchools ratings. Three of them rank a perfect 10, and the remaining school has a rating of 9. Residents can opt to send their children to any of five local private educational facilities. Almost 65 percent of the adult population has a 4-year college degree. That's more than twice the national percentage.
This town's seven-mile coastline boasts sheer cliffs, rolling hills, coves and canyons. It's no wonder that the area draws millions of global visitors yearly. Laguna Beach residents have access to numerous neighborhood parks with picnic spaces, playgrounds and scenic views. Located within 10 minutes of the community, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park is an especially desirable recreational destination. With 19,000 acres of coastal preserves, woods, lakes and trails, it's a nature enthusiasts paradise.
Land is in high demand, and property values have steadily increased over the decades, except for a slight downturn in 1995. The median price for a single-family, detached home in 1990 was $457,000. Ten years later, it was $675,000. In 2004, the same size home went for $1.2 million. However, available listings start at under $600,000. While the median age for properties is 51 years, you can find homes from any decade. Almost one-third of the Laguna Beach residents rent their homes.
